Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
John 15:18
Saint Maximilian Kolbe took these words of Christ to the next level, he chose to lay down his life for a complete stranger.
What could lead a quiet priest from Poland to voluntarily die in the place of a Jewish father in the death camps of the Nazi SS? A man that wasn’t a Catholic, wasn’t even a Christian, wasn’t ethnically Polish, and didn’t personally know Fr Kolbe.
The only thing that mattered was that he was made in the image and likeness of God, and deserving of the love and dignity that all humans are entitled to. Also Maximilian Kolbe so intimately identified with his priestly relationship with Jesus that he didn’t hesitate to lay down his life to save another’s.
