Readings:
Zechariah 9-11
The opening of chapter 9 contains a prophecy against some of Israel’s most tenacious enemies. They will be brought low for their sins and their antagonism against God and his people.
The second half of this chapter should jump off the page to most of the people who read it. It’s a messianic prophecy that was clearly and obviously fulfilled by Jesus before his passion.
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt the foal of a donkey.
Zechariah 9:9
If we consider that the church is the Israel of the new covenant, then the line about Judah and its sons overrunning the sons of Greece can be seen as the downfall of paganism due to the spread of the church.
The following chapter, and the beginning of 11, are about God gathering back the people to himself from all around. This was seen as a sign of the messiah, that he’d regather the tribes, and that’s what Jesus did when he specifically chose 12 apostles and then opened the promises of the covenant to all nations and gathered them to himself.
