The Bible In A Year: Day 270

Readings:
Lamentations 4-5
Hebrews 13

The book ends with Jeremiah pleading for mercy from God. He acknowledges the sins of the people being great, he himself prophesied against them, but he’s throwing in the towel and praying for God to end their suffering now. Eventually this would be answered, but they’re only in year 1 of 70 during the exile.

Hebrews 13

The final chapter is a listing of a few recommendations and commands to keep a moral life. Some of the things including avoiding adultery and not neglecting hospitality was also practiced by the Jewish communities, so this wouldn’t be anything new for them, just reminders because many of the Jewish converts to Christianity were living in pagan towns with pagan neighbors. Bad company corrupts good morals and all…

He again compares our meals (the Eucharist) with the eaten portions of the sacrifices of the temple, and reminds them again of the superiority of the sacrifice of the new covenant and what we eat in the new covenant. Because in many of the sacrifices under the mosaic law you ate (or at least the priest ate it in many instances) a portion of the sacrifice, but it was just the flesh of an animal. Now we eat the flesh of God that was sacrificed for us once and for all.

Readings:
Micah 1-4
2 Corinthians 1
