The Bible In A Year: Day 249

Readings:
Jeremiah 10
Sirach 40
2 Peter 2

God takes aim at the lifeless idols of the nations around them. When a real, living God, that rescued your fathers out of slavery with power and signs, sends a prophet to tell you that you have wasted your opportunities by worshipping pieces of wood and stone, you might feel very foolish. Apparently the people that Jeremiah was speaking to didn’t care very much, because they continued to worship these lifeless idols up until the Babylonians killed or exiled them.

2 Peter 2

Peter warns them that false teachers are among them and that their false teachings will ultimately lead to destruction. He makes a comparison with the fate of fallen angels and those swept away in the deluge during the time of Noah. Also the cities of sodom and Gomorrah, how the wicked were punished but the righteous saved. This is how God will deal with all men at the final judgment.

Those who indulge their base passions claim to have liberty, Saint Peter says, but they are slaves to sin and desire. They aren’t truly free, because only those who’ve submitted to the light and easy yoke of Christ are freed from the lusts of the flesh.

Tomorrow’s Readings:
Jeremiah 11
Sirach 41
2 Peter 3
