The Bible In A Year: Day 217

Readings:
1 Chronicles 22
Sirach 8
Galatians 4

Galatians 4

Paul compares living under the law to being a minor who is set to receive an inheritance, but until the time appointed by his benefactor he is under a conservatorship and so not truly free to inherit what’s been given to him. But in the fullness of time, when God sent His own Son to be born into the same law as this nation, he frees them to be true heirs to all the inheritance and so free from the conservatorship of the law.

This is really a great metaphor that Paul lays out here and it helps to see what he means about slavery and liberty under the law when we think about it in these terms.

Paul tells them the story of Isaac and Ishmael, one born from a slave through natural processes of the flesh and one born of Abraham’s wife according to the promises of God and by miraculously means. He says one is analogous to the law from Mount Sinai and one is analogous to living freely under grace from Jesus Christ.

Tomorrow’s Readings:
