The Bible In A Year: Day 190

Readings:
Isaiah 27-28
Proverbs 15
Romans 6:1-14

Isaiah 27-28

More warnings for Jerusalem on what to expect when their time for judgment comes due. They’ve received so much warning, and even before they entered into the promised land they were told the penalty for breaking the covenant, but they did it anyway, and not just once or twice, they did it repeatedly throughout the centuries. Now they draw close to the time when the bill for all this rebellion has to be paid.

Romans 6:1-14

In the previous chapter, Paul says that where sin is found grace is found all the more. So then he asks a a hypothetical question of if sin brings about grace, should we sin even more to receive even more grace. The obvious answer is an emphatic NO, but Paul does better than that and lays out reasoning for why the answer is no.

We die in baptism symbolically when we go into the water, and when we come out we rise to newness of life in Jesus Christ. If we died to our old self and to sin, how can we continue to sin and think it’s a good thing.

Grace is not a license to sin, thinking that you’ll be forgiven anyway. Grace is to forgive us of our sins and help us resist sin and temptation, not to be abused and taken advantage of.

Tomorrow’s Readings:
Isaiah 29-32
Romans 6:15-23
