The Most Rev. Edward B. Scharfenberger,
Bishop of Albany
Your Excellency,
I was encouraged to read your letter to Governor Cuomo about the bill working it’s way through the N.Y. state legislature that would codify abortion and expand the ways and times to kill the unborn in ways not seen in other states. As you mentioned, NY has an abortion rate already twice that of other states, and this new law will only increase this already terrible statistic. That Andrew Cuomo publicly declares himself a Catholic, and also makes attempts to square his extremist position on abortion with his Catholic faith, is offensive to all Catholics in New York, and the rest of the nation, who believe what the Church teaches, that all life is sacred and worthy of protection.
Governor Cuomo’s actions have endanger the lives of countless children who can now be killed even after surviving an attempted abortion, and has also endangered his own soul.
Because he refused to reconsider after your public letter of rebuke, it is the opinion of Catholics across this nation that Gov Andrew Cuomo be excommunicated from the Catholic Church, not as a punishment but as a call for his repentance and conversion. Just as Saint Ambrose made Emperor Theodosius perform public penance outside the Cathedral in Milan to atone for his crimes against humanity, we call on you to inform Governor Cuomo that his actions have separated himself from the Body of Christ and placed him in the camp of the forces of death and allied him with Satan. To allow him to still approach a minister and receive communion in a state of rebellion against the teachings of the Church only adds more damage to the state of his soul, is an occasion of scandal for the faithful and will damage their belief in those same teachings.
Yours faithfully in Christ,
Charles Johnston
NY Gov. Cuomo has publicly excommunicated himself and it’s important that the bishop makes that clear to all the faithful. Thank you for this letter.

This is a fantastic letter! I have thought about writing one myself to not this Bishop but all the Bishops at USCCB. Thank you for writing this letter.

Thank you Bishop Scharfenberger
For standing for those precious lambs of God
Ephesians 6:12
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood but against principalities against powers against rulers of darkness of this world against spiritual darkness in high places
Are we praying wrong and focusing on man and not the unseen force that’s driving him to evil. Maybe we should study this scripture and see if we get better results
Rachel weeping for her children and she cannot be comforted.

Thank you for your well thought out letter. Though I am no longer a Catholic I still believe in the sanctity of life! My own religious beliefs teach this same theme. God is the only one who can make the decision on life and death. He proves this when He chose to give up His son so that the world would be saved. I must tell you that I am a Methodist to the point i have retired from the ministry of the church. LOL! I know that you can never leave the church!
As far as the politics of life going on in New York I know from past experiences within my family that you are bound by the beliefs of the church. Once you have disobeyed those beliefs then your are open to punishment from the church. My beliefs on this matter is that there is an alternative to this mass killing of Gods babies. It is to allow them to be adopted and given a home with loving parents. For the Governor of NY all i can say is may you receive exactly what you deserve for killing full term babies! Excommunication would be fitting as well as denying the sacraments too him! This isn’t a religious solution but a political one for this man to keep his control on the State of New York and forgetting who is his God!
